1. 31st ASEAN Summit started in Philippines
  
The Philippines will conclude its year-long ASEAN hosting duties with the 31st ASEAN Summit from 12-14 November.
  • Around 20 world leaders are in the Philippines to attend the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit.
Points to Remember
  • ASEAN's theme for 2017 is 'Partnering for Change, Engaging the World'.
  • It was formed on 8 August 1967. It has 10 member countries.
  • Rodrigo Duterte is the current Chairman of the organization.
2. Varanasi Tops The List of Country's Most Polluted City
At a time when National Capital is hitting the headlines over alarming levels of pollution, a report by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has found that the air quality of holy city Varanasi is most polluted among the 42 cities monitored recently.
  • Varanasi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) at 4 PM was at an alarming  491, followed by Gurugram at 480, Delhi at 468, Lucknow at 462 and Kanpur at 461.
  • Notably, pollution level is categorised as ‘severe’ when the AQI ranges between 401 and 500, which affects healthy people and seriously impacts those with existing diseases.
3. Mumbai to host Asian Bankers Association summit
For the first time, the nation’s financial capital will host the 34th annual conference of the Asian Bankers Association (ABA).
  • The two-day conference will be held in the megapolis from November 16 and will be hosted by State Bank, with the theme of ‘Asia’s turn to transform’.
4. Tulsi Gabbard named chairperson of World Hindu Congress 2018
Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu lawmaker in the US Congress, has been named as the chairperson of the World Hindu Congress to be held in Chicago next year.
  • Held once every four years, World Hindu Congress (WHC) is a global platform for Hindus to connect, share ideas, inspire one another and impact the common good.
  • Organised by the World Hindu Foundation, the first Congress was held in New Delhi in 2014. The second WHC will take place in Illinois in Chicago from September 7 to 9 next year.
5. Ravi Bangar is the next Ambassador of India to Ecuador
Shri Ravi Bangar, (IFS: 1982) has been concurrently accredited as the next Ambassador of India to Ecuador, with residence in Bogota.
  • He is expected to take up the assignment shortly. He is presently Ambassador of lndia to Colombia.
6. NINL gets prestigious Kalinga Safety Award
Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL) received the prestigious "Kalinga Safety Award" in the 8th Odisha State Safety Conclave.
  • The Odisha-based NINL got the award in gold category for best safety performer of the year 2016.
  • The Odisha State Safety Conclave was organised by Institute of Quality and Environment Management Services (IQEMS) and institute of Public Enterprises.
7. Dipa Karmakar honoured with D.Litt. by NIT Agartala
  
India's star gymnast Dipa Karmakar has been conferred a D.Litt. degree from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Agartala.
  • The 24-year-old Tripura girl is the first Indian woman gymnast to have qualified for the Olympics.
  • She finished fourth in the final round of the women's vault event at the Rio Olympics Games in Brazil last year.
8. Pankaj Advani wins 17th world title
Ace Indian cueist Pankaj Advani clinched his 17th world title after he thrashed his arch-rival Mike Russell of England in the IBSF World Billiards Championship.
  • Advani beat Russell 6-2 (0-155, 150-128, 92-151, 151-0, 151-6, 151-0, 150-58, 150-21) to defend the 150-up format title he had won in Bengaluru last year.
9. Former Test cricketer Milkha Singh passes away
  
Former India cricketer A G Milkha Singh passed away after a cardiac arrest at a hospital in Chennai. He was 75.
  • Milkha Singh played four Test matches in the early 60s.
  • His elder brother Kripal Singh, also played for the country in 14 Tests. They played together in one Test against England in 1961-’62.
