1. World Pneumonia Day: November 12
World Pneumonia Day is observed on 12th November every year around the world.
- World Pneumonia Day was first observed in 2009 when over 100 organisations joined to form the Global Coalition against Child Pneumonia.
- World Pneumonia Day helps to highlight the severity of pneumonia and encourages more organisations to look at ways of fighting the disease.
2. Extreme weather events: India 6th most vulnerable country
India is the sixth most vulnerable country in the world in terms of facing extreme weather events with Haiti, Zimbabwe, Fiji, Sri Lanka and Vietnam taking top five positions in the fresh list of nations facing climate risk.
- The ranking was released here by the German watch, an independent Berlin-based development and environmental organization, in its latest global climate risk index (CRI).
- The Index put the United States (US) at 10th position with Chinese Taipei, Macedonia and Bolivia being the other three vulnerable countries in the list of top ten.
3. Bangladesh's first Hindu Chief Justice resigns
Bangladesh's first Hindu Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha has resigned after facing allegations of bribery and money laundering.
- A month ago he had gone abroad. Sinha became the country's 21st Chief Justice on January 17, 2015.
- His tenure was going to be completed on January 31 next year.
4. Environment ministry forms 7-member panel to monitor Delhi pollution
The environment ministry has reportedly taken action and ordered the forming of a 7-member committee to tackle the Delhi air pollution.
- The committee formed by the environment ministry will look to formulate short-term and long-term plans.
- The committee will be headed by environment secretary CK Mishra.
5. WCD Ministry to celebrate CCI Festival “Hausala 2017”
The Ministry of Women and Child Development will celebrate the Child Rights Week (Hausla 2017) from 16th to 20th November, 2017.
- The country celebrates the Children’s Day on 14th November and the International Child Rights Day is celebrated on 20th November every year.
- The period between the two important events will be celebrated as Child Rights Week by WCD Ministry by hosting an Inter CCI Festival for the children who reside in Child Care Institutions (CCIs).
6. Butterfly conservatory park to come up in Gurugram
North India's biggest Butterfly Conservatory Park will be set up in Haryana's Gurugram district to save species under threat from rapid urbanisation from going extinct.
- Butterflies thrive on flowering plants. The park will be of scientific importance and be a green area in Gurugram.
7. UNHCR to get Mother Teresa Award 2017 for social justice
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has been named as the recipient of the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice, 2017 as an acknowledgement of its exceptional work worldwide.
- The UNHCR provides humanitarian aid to innumerable people internally displaced by conflicts and helping stateless people all over the world,
- Harmony Foundation has instituted the only official award in memory of Mother Teresa, who attained sainthood in September 2016.
8. Former Nepal PM Bista passes away at 90
Former Prime Minister of Nepal Kirti Nidhi Bista passed away at the age of 90 in Kathmandu.
- Born in Thamel, Kathmandu, Bista became Prime Minister for three times from 1969 to 1970, 1971 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979 and was the Vice-chair in the government led by then King Gyanendra Shaha
