1. Kiren Rijiju inaugurates the ‘India Disaster Response Summit’
The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju has said that India need to prepare itself for moving towards Disaster Risk Management (DRM) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) from an approach of traditional Disaster Management.
- Shri Rijiju was inaugurating the ‘India Disaster Response Summit’, organised jointly by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Facebook, on how best to leverage social media platforms to 'prepare, respond and recover' for, during and after a disaster.
- He emphasised that Disaster Mitigation Strategy should be areas of priority for addressing Disaster Risk Management.
2. Short Film Competition on Divyangjan Shashaktikaran-2017
Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot, Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment presented the Awards to the winners of ‘Short Film Competition on Divyangjan Shashaktikaran-2017’ at a felicitation event organised by Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangja) under M/o Social Justice and Empowerment in collaboration with Directorate of Film Festival.
- The award for Best Short Film was given to Suyash Shinde for Azan, Abhay Punjabi for Achala, Amit Sonkar for Tum Main aur Hum Sab and B.D. Banshkar for I know Sign Language.
- Narendra Joshi’s Sugamaya Bharat and Jyotsna Puthran’s Zebra Crossing bagged the first position in the categories of Documentary and T.V. Spot, respectively.
3. Modi, Hasina, Mamata flag-off Kolkata-Khulna train service
A new passenger train service between Kolkata and Bangladesh's southwestern industrial city of Khulna was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina and the West Bengal chief minister.
- A fully air-conditioned weekly passenger train service 'Bandhan Express' will run every Thursday from both Kolkata and Khulna.
- On the occasion, Modi said the ties of friendship between India and Bangladesh have further strengthened.
4. IDFC Bank partners MobiKwik
On the first anniversary of demonetisation, IDFC Bank has entered into a “strategic alliance” with mobile wallet major MobiKwik to launch a co-branded virtual Visa prepaid card for customers of MobiKwik.
- One need not be a customer of IDFC Bank to use the co-branded pre-paid card.
- MobiKwik had a user base of 65 million. In the last one year, MobiKwik’s reach has increased from 1 lakh to 20 lakh merchants.
5. 'Suno RBI Kya Kehta Hai' campaign against fake offers soon
The Reserve Bank will soon launch an awareness campaign - Suno RBI Kya Kehta Hai - through SMSes to warn the public against falling prey to unsolicited and fictitious offers from fraudsters.
- The drive comes amid rising instances of fraudsters trying to dupe gullible customers by promising them lucrative financial gains and prize money through e-mails and SMSes, and even through phone calls.
- The cautionary messages will be sent from 'RBISAY' sender ID.
6. Dubai bank Emirates NBD begins operations in India
Emirates NBD, the UAE's second-largest lender, has started operations in India.
- The Mumbai branch marks the bank's fifth international branch outside of its UAE network.
- The bank plans to invest USD 100 million capital into its Indian operations, Emirates NBD said.
7. Union minister Alphons elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha
Union Minister of State for Tourism and BJP leader Alphons Kannanthanam was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan.
- The seat fell vacant after M Venkaiah Naidu s election as the country's vice president on August 5.
- Secretary of the legislative assembly Prithvi Raj said Kannanthanam was elected unopposed as no other nomination was filed for the seat.
8. Girija Devi to get posthumous Lifetime Achievement award
Eminent classical singer late Girija Devi will be honoured with the prestigious Sumitra Charat Ram Award for Lifetime Achievement.
- The award will be presented by Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State (Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs) to the thumri maestro's daughter, Sudha Datta, at Kamani Auditorium.
9. Padma Shri awardee author Manu Sharma passes away
Noted author and Padma Shri awardee Manu Sharma alias Hanuman Prasad Sharma died following a prolonged illness.He was 89.
- He was nominated as one of the 'navratna' of the Swachha Bharat Abhiyan by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Varanasi, his Lok Sabha constituency in 2014.
- Sharma had donated his lifetime savings of Rs 20 lakh for the renovation of a 'ghat' in Varanasi to carry out a cleanliness campaign.
- He was also the recipient of the prestigious Yash Bharti Award of the Uttar Pradesh government.
- Sharma has authored several hindi books including 'Krishna Ki Atmakatha'
