1. World Diabetes Day: 14 November
World Diabetes Day is the primary global awareness campaign focusing on diabetes mellitus and is observed on November 14 each year.
- Led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), each World Diabetes Day focuses on a theme related to diabetes.
- Type 2 Diabetes is largely preventable and treatable non-communicable disease that is rapidly increasing in numbers worldwide.
- Type 1 Diabetes is not preventable but can be treated with insulin shots.
- This year’s theme is ‘Women and diabetes – our right to a healthy future’.
2. Rice Field laboratory in Manila named after PM Modi
While on his visit to Philippines, PM Narendra Modi visited the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Los Banos, Philippines and inaugurated ‘Shri Narendra Modi Resilient Rice Field Laboratory’.
- He also presented two Indian rice seed varieties to the IRRI gene bank.
- IRRI is a premier research organisation dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science.
3. Northeast to get India's first ever 'Air Dispensary'
Northeast is all set to get India’s first-ever "Air Dispensary" based in a helicopter and the Union Ministry of Development of Northeast (DONER) has already contributed Rs. 25 crore as part of the initial funding for this initiative.
- As per the envisaged plan, Dr Jitendra Singh said, to begin with, helicopter will be based at two locations, namely Imphal in Manipur and Meghalaya in Shillong.
- Both of these cities have premier postgraduate medical institutes from where specialist doctors, along with the necessary equipment and paramedical staff, would be able to move into the helicopter and hold a dispensary/OPD in different locations across the eight States of North Eastern Region.
- On its way back, he said, the same helicopter can also transport a sick patient, requiring admission, to a city hospital.
- Giving an account of other new helicopter service plans for Northeast, Dr Jitendra Singh said, three twin-engine helicopters are planned to be placed for initial operation on six routes in the region around Imphal, Guwahati and Dibrugarh.
4. Col. Rajyavardhan releases the India Youth Development Index and Report 2017
Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports (Independent Charge) Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore released the India Youth Development Index and Report 2017.
- The objective of constructing the India Youth Development Index (YDI) 2017 is to track the trends in Youth Development across the States.
- The Index enables recognizing the high and low performing states, identifies the weak domains and informs the policy makers the priority areas of intervention for youth development in the states.
- The Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, an Institute of National Importance has come out with Youth Development Index and Report 2017.
- This is a pioneering attempt made by the Institute in 2010 which it followed up with the India Youth Development Index in 2017.
5. 4th Annual India-Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade Held in New Delhi
The 4th India-Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment was held in New Delhi.
- The Indian Delegation was led by the Minister for Commerce and Industry, Shri Suresh Prabhu while the Canadian side was headed by the Minister for International Trade, Mr. François-Philippe Champagne.
- The talks were held in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere covering a host of trade and investment issues.
- Both sides recognized that the current bilateral trade is much below the potential between the two world’s robust economies, despite the huge untapped potential for two-way trade and investment.
6. Army Organised Youth Fest at Kishtwar
Army organised a mega event Youth Fest : 2017 on 13 Nov 2017 at the historic Chowgan ground of Kishtwar.
- The Fest was an amalgamation of varied programmes highlighting the rich culture of different regions of India and stalls of food, entertainment and games for people of all the age groups to rejoice & cherish.
- The event also encompassed display of various ethnic specialities from across the country.
7. Government launches BharatNet Phase II
The government launched Phase II of BharatNet project through which it aims to provide high-speed broadband connections to all panchayats by the end of 2019.
- Jio has given over Rs 13.19 crore, Airtel Rs 5 crore, Idea Cellular Rs 5 lakh and Vodafone Rs 11 lakh to take connectivity to villages in rural India.
- The government is starting the Phase II with an outlay of Rs 34,000 crore.
- Telecom secretary Aruna Sundararajan said BharatNet Phase I is 90 per cent completed. It will be fully completed by December 2017.
- Under Phase I, 1 lakh panchayats or 3 lakh villages were connected. Phase II of BharatNet is expected to connect 1.5 lakh panchayats.
8. Biggest Asean-India business summit in Delhi in January
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the largest so far Asean-India business and investment summit is slated to be held in New Delhi in January next year.
- Addressing the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit here, Modi also said that a conference to discuss increasing connectivity between both regions is also due to take place next month in New Delhi.
- The Prime Minister also said that work is in progress to conclude a maritime transport agreement with the Asean.
- Modi arrived on a three-day visit to the Philippines during which he will attend the 15th India-Asean Summit and the 12th East Asia Summit.
9. YES Bank’s fintech survey to study ecosystem worldwide
YES Bank is all set to launch a first-of-its-kind fintech survey. Called India Fintech Opportunities Review, the study will cover India and a few major fintech markets in the world.
- A research initiative of YES FINTECH, which is the bank’s innovation programme to accelerate fintech start-ups, the survey will cover more than 1,000 firms globally.
10. Saeed Ajmal announces retirement from all forms of cricket
Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal has announced that he will retire from all forms of cricket at the end of the ongoing National Twenty20 tournament.
- In 35 Tests, he bagged 178 wickets while in 113 ODIs, he took 184 wickets at an average of 22.72 and an economy rate of 4.18.
- He has played 64 T20Is, in which he has taken 85 wickets.
